A pretty good issue of MMWR this week. The main articles:
Eastern Equine Encephalitis: mosquito-borne, very dangerous and the locality in discussion is my own beloved New England. Nice table, great map.
Dengue Fever: mosquito-borne (sense a summer-related theme?), more common, the word "autochthonous" is used several times. I'd like the article better if it called dengue by its traditional name, "Break Bone Fever."
"Human Salmonellosis Associated with Animal-Derived Pet Treats — United States and Canada, 2005": Oh yes. You can catch salmonellosis from doggie treats. Not just any doggie treats, but what sound like gourmet all-natural doggie treats. This is the kind of article that I read MMWR for - people getting sick doing something that seems like a good idea but turns out to be an infectious disease vector! Bonus: it is partially the fault of the Canadians. Oh, those Canucks.
At the end are the infectious disesease tables. 3,046 Mississippians and 1,196 Massachusetts residents have caught the clap this year. Our national mumps epidemic, centered in the midwest, continues. And more!
So put on your repellent, wash your hands after giving Rover his nibble, wear your rubbers and please, get your shots!
